There are three types of steeply dipping crustal to lithospheric scale discontinuity that accommodates strike-slip motion
Transcurrent plate boundary: The San Andreas fault (right), is a dextral transcurrent faults that marks the boundary between the North American and the Pacific plate moving towards the NW.

In a convergence setting such as the Himalayas, lithospheric scale strike-slip faults accommodate part of the convergence between the Indo-Australian and Asian plates. Semi-rigid continental blocks move away from the convergence zone to provide space for the indenter (India). This is this illustrated by the physical experiment (above) where colored plasticine represents Asia whereas the rigid block represents India.

Transfrom faults are prominent breaks in the oceanic lithosphere. These discontinuities transfer MOR-related extension from locality to another. |
