DRIVING FORCES FOR LITHOSPHERIC DEFORMATION |
In this example the balance of forces is such that the overiding plate is in extension. A back arc basin develops instead of a mountain belt. The dip angle of the subducting slab, the relative motion between the asthenosphere and the oceanic lithosphere, and the motion between the M.O.R. and the continental lithosphere impact on the sign of the resultant horizontal force (Fsu) acting of the overiding plate. |
