Geography, Geology and Geophysics are field sciences and emphasis is placed on the analysis of objects in their real world setting. Fieldwork and field excursions are an integral part of all units, and students contemplating any units are urged to consider the relevant field work requirements before they enrol. Due dates for fieldwork assignments will be announced by lecturers in charge of Units.
In Junior Units of Study students are normally required to spend the equivalent of at least two days in the field, especially in Geology. Students are expected to bear costs of overnight accommodation, transport and meals.
Excursions for Intermediate and Senior Units are between one weeks duration (for typically Intermediate Units) and two weeks duration (for typically Senior Units) and students are also expected to bear living and transport costs.
A four-to five-week overseas Field School is held for Human and Environmental Geography in January-February each year, alternating between Southeast Asia and the South Western Pacific. It costs approximately $3000 and counts as two 6 credit point Senior Units of Study.
