One of the fundamental discourses shaping urban development in Australia is the importance of economic growth. While economic growth can be measured in many terms, it is the rising levels of consumption that are associated with ‘growth’ that is at the heart of the contemporary debate surrounding sustainability in Australian cities. With over three quarters of Australia’s population (and now over half the global population) living in urban areas, the relationship of the ‘urban’ to production and consumption of resources is the most important space for the future of Australian (and global) environments.

This PhD is seeking to use an Urban Political Ecology approach to untangle the interconnected economic, political, social and ecological process that produce highly uneven urban environments through an analysis of two urban redevelopment areas.
