PhD research title: Geopark and Geotourism: a management approach for valuable geological heritages in China.
Young's research interests include the development, management and the environmental, scio-economical impacts of geological parks and geological tourism around the world.
Geopark is like a national park but using rocks and landforms as the main attraction. Geotourism is tourism activities involving visitation to interesting or valuable geological sites or heritages. In recent years, geopark and geotourism have been widely used, especially in China, to manage valuable geological features.
Young's current research assesses the overall impacts of geopark development in China so as to evaluate geopark and geotourism as a viable and sustainable management approach for protecting geological features, popularizing geosciences and developing local economy. His research is the first of its type in studying the Chinese geopark and geotourism development as perceived by geopark management, visitors, local business operators and villagers. The pros and cons of geopark development in China will be identified and evaluated. The result may be used as a development model for other countries around the world.
