PhD title: Tectonic evolution of the Indian Ocean
Following a recent study by Whittaker et al. 2007, positioning Australia over 500 km further east relative to the Antarctica at about 83 million years ago, other reconstructions of Gondwana now need to be revised.
Starting in the Wharton Basin (northeast Indian Ocean), this project will revisit seafloor spreading anomalies to derive poles of rotations for fit reconstructions in an iterative fashion using EarthByte advanced plate tectonic software and database system.
Freely available pre-existing magnetic data (from GEODAS) will be used, as well as new data from my participation in a two-month research cruise around the Wharton Basin and Christmas Island Seamount Province area during August and September 2008 with IFM GEOMAR, onboard the German Research Vessel Sonne.
